Applications

So you can edit Word documents opened as read-only

Office-oriented programs have grown and evolved over the years. This is the case, for example, with the popular Microsoft Word or Excel applications, which are part of full Office suite of the company. In fact, they are already considered two of the most used programs in the world.

And it is necessary to keep in mind that both are valid for domestic and professional work. That is why users all over the world choose to use them on a daily basis when performing office tasks. That is why in these same lines we are going to talk about one of them, in particular the Microsoft word processor, Word. Despite its use and updates, this widely used and widely used program is not foolproof, and although very occasionally we may encounter bugs or issues, as it is.

So, as we tell you in these same lines, we are going to focus on a fairly common problem that occurs in the mentioned word processor, Word . Specifically, we are referring to the assumption that we are going to access the content of a certain document, and this only opens in read mode. This can become a serious problem, especially if we have to keep working on it or want to make changes.

That is why we will give you some tips below to solve it. Of course, this is something that can happen without us having configured this setting, of course. So, in case we find this problem unexpectedly, we have to try to find a solution to all of it. This is precisely what we will try to talk about next.

What to do if Word opens documents as read-only

And it should be borne in mind that this disadvantage can be very annoying, since the read-only mode does not allow the text editing . Therefore, if necessary, the first thing we will do is make sure that another user with access to the equipment has not blocked the DOC so that changes cannot be made to the content, something more than usual.

At the same time, something that we also need to take into consideration before we start to touch the program settings, is another possible reason. And is that in case we have a Word without activating its license , or expired, and even hacked, it won't let us edit the documents. In this case, we will tell you that you still have the option of using the free version of word on the Internet.

Once we know this another thing we can do is turn off restrictions on editing documents. To do this, simply open the document in read-only, and on the Developer tab, find the Restrict Editing option. Then in the new panel that opens, we click on the Stop protection button to fix this problem.

How to be able to re-edit Word documents

On the other hand, you should know that sometimes, when we receive a Word file as an attachment and we're trying to open it for editing, we can't. This way, it opens directly in read-only mode, which is problematic. Therefore, we can try to open the Word file and in the File menu option click on Options.

Change Word options

In the window that opens, in the left pane, we go to General and in the right pane we go down to the option Open e attachments - mails and other files that cannot be edited in reading view. So what we need to do is uncheck the box if it is checked and save the changes. From that point on, any Word file we receive as an email attachment will open normally.

Change the properties of the problematic Word file

Finally, we will talk about another possible solution that you can use in case you come across this annoying problem. In short, in this case we are going to focus on modifying the file properties in as such. In other words, we refer to the properties of the .DOC in which we were working and which we can no longer change. To do this, what we do is right-click on the document that is causing us the problems and select Properties from the context menu. In the window that will appear then, we must uncheck the box Read only . As you can imagine, this should fix the problem we have with the document itself.
