Router QoS: what is it, what is it for and how do I configure it on my local WiFi network?

It often happens that, in a network structure, the devices have the same hierarchical rank, but it is necessary that some of them have priorities over others in terms of Internet browsing .

Depending on this situation, we have the possibility of activate a tool from our own router called Quality of Service , which consists in increasing the quality of service for each of the clients or equipment connected to this WiFi network.

In this article, we will show you what this quality of service means and what are its most important advantages when we implement this option. In addition, we will talk about the steps we will need to take to configure QoS. Do not miss any detail of this post.

What is the “quality of service” or QoS of my router and what are the benefits of using it?

Quality of Service or Quality of Service is the system by which the network can segment information, VoIP and video , in order to transmit them correctly, thus reducing latency.

We can configure it in two ways, the one via an app and the other via MAC address .

When we do this through an app, what we are programming is to prioritize certain software over others that may be installed on the same computer or device.

For configuration via MAC address , we manage the priority in relation to this type of links and do not take into account the programs as in the previous case.

In other words, we will give priority to the device that has this MAC address that we have indicated, being able to add , also, the first criterion that we mentioned above. Therefore, we can configure not only the display of a MAC priority filter, but also the fact that some programs can be prioritized in this device.

In this way, we can significantly reduce the latency to achieve other benefits which we will mention below:

Decrease latency

By being able to segment the data transfer and direct it for certain paths, we dramatically reduce delay bounce time because we focus each of those data packets on the correct path.

Segmentation control

Thanks to this configuration, we can prioritize the different computers that connect to the network and we will get a much better quality to prioritize the affected software.

Streaming quality

Thanks to the reduction in latency, we can watch streaming media content with much better stability , thus generating a better user experience.

Reduce the congestion of deliveries

Because data packets may take different paths or routes to reach the receiver, they can often be lost or delayed.

With frequency segmentation, what we're doing is that these data streams, which are Internet voice and video, may arrive with much better quality due to synchronization of the same data and the order in which they are delivered.

We can activate them in the operating system

In this way, on our computer, we will have specifically controlled which programs we can prioritize.

Can QoS really improve the quality of my WiFi network?

“UPDATE ✅ Do you need to know what is the quality of service of your router and how to improve it? ⭐ ENTER HERE ⭐ and find out how to do it ✅ EASY and QUICK ✅ »

QoS was created to improve the quality of the wireless network, but on several occasions and it is not effective because it brings issues that did not exist when it was not enabled.

Among the problems that we can mention:

  • It overheats the router, causing more forced work on it.
  • It uses more RAM and CPU memory of the routing device, so it puts overload in these processes and makes the wireless network a little more idle.

Steps to Configure and Enable Quality of Service in Your Router

As we mentioned before, we can configure QoS for a computer or directly for a network of them. In addition, we can filter based on MAC address, as well as prioritize different applications.

We will see below how to configure according to these criteria. The steps to follow are as follows:

We enter the router

In order to access the interface of our device, we will follow this guide:

  • We enter with our browser, we write 192.168.1.1 in the address bar.
  • We write down the username and password we have.

We select the Network option

Once we have entered the router configuration, we will follow each of these steps:

  • We go to the option "Network" .
  • We select "Ports" .
  • We go to the section "QoS" .

We choose to activate for the whole network

When we need to activate for the whole network, we will have to do it:

  • Activate the option "Start QoS" .
  • We choose the networks for which we will configure, being able to choose "WAN or WLAN" .

We configure data priority

We choose the protocol for which we can prioritize small data packets in the TCP option.

We can activate:

  • ACK
  • SYN
  • END
  • RTS

We choose the programs that will have priorities

At this point, we have the option of choosing the software that will have a different priority over the others.

To do this, we will follow these guidelines:

  • We are going to "Service priority" .
  • We select the option "Add" and look for the site we want to add, prioritizing each one and choosing between variables in a range from "Maximum" à "Standard" .

If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments, we will get back to you as soon as possible, and it will be a great help for more community members as well. Thank you!
