What is a Telegram channel?

A Telegram channel is a one way chat where messages, images or videos are posted. Users who join the channel can see posts, but cannot reply. Each channel has one or more administrators, who are the only users allowed to post. The notifications received from the channels are exactly the same as for a regular chat.

To understand it better, we can compare the Telegram channels with the whatsapp mailing lists. Messages are sent from one channel to a specific list of people. However, unlike mailing lists, the user can decide whether to subscribe or not and they have a Permanent link which uniquely identifies it. They can be seen as a hybrid between mailing lists and groups. Anyone can make their own Telegram channel and it's a very simple process. Below we explain how to do it.

Create Telegram channel from Android app

  1. Open Telegram and on the pencil icon that you have in the lower right corner. On the next screen, select the option New channel.
  2. Give a string name, customize its thumbnail and describe it so users know what to expect.
  3. The next step is to further customize your new channel. It is possible to create them private or public. In addition, you must assign it a Permanent link which will help users join and share the channel.
  4. If all went well, your new Telegram channel is ready. All you have to do is invite whoever you want to join or hope they find it through search.
