Google Chrome includes 20 new themes; so you can customize the new tabs

A month ago, Google experimentally added a series of native themes in the browser that allowed us to customize the look of the new tab. Google Chrome . These new themes, available only in the Canary branch of the browser, have been disabled by default. They were also quite limited as it was an experiment still in the preliminary phase. Today, with the last update of the Canary Islands branch, Google has integrated 20 new themes into the browser, themes that we can now test.

The first thing to keep in mind is that new browser themes are always disabled by default due to the fact that this is an experimental feature. If we want to test them, the first thing to do is to install the version Canary from Google Chrome and, in addition, to activate the following flags to allow the use of the new themes:

  • chrome://flags/#chrome-colors
  • chrome://flags/#ntp-customization-menu-v2

An overview of the new themes in the new Google Chrome tab

If we have already installed the latest update to the Canary branch of the browser and have enabled the previous flags, we can start using these new themes. To do this we will open a new tab in the browser and at the bottom right we will see a button called "Personalize".

Click on this button and we can see how a window appears from which we can choose different customization options.

The first section of this window is "Background", and it lets us choose the background we want to apply to the new Chrome OS style browser tab. The section that interests us is » Color and theme «. Click on it and we can see the new themes that have reached Google Chrome.

As we can see, the list of topics is much larger than what we saw a month ago. Whereas before there were only 4 possibilities, we now have a total of 20 new themes that we can use to customize our browser as well as new tabs.

By clicking on each of these topics, we will automatically apply it in the browser.

As we can see, Google wants to give its browser a new look, and this new browser appearance customization system is undoubtedly a big step forward, although it is not yet available to users. .

When new Chrome themes reach all users

At the moment, this feature is still in development and is only available to Google Chrome users within the Canary branch, i.e. the most unstable development branch of the browser (Chrome 77).

Before these themes reach all users by default and we can use them to personalize Google Chrome, Google needs to finish developing this feature. When you consider it stable, then it is ready to reach everyone.

We don't know when that will happen, although there's a good chance we won't see it until Google Chrome 77 launches (i.e. in two major browser updates). At the moment, we can only hope. If we are impatient, we can install the Canary version of the browser to test the new themes, although we remember that it may be unstable.
