GPU or PC Graphics Processing Unit: what is it and what is it for? How it works?

Since the launch of the computer , work has been done time and time again to improve people's experience of using it. If you are a computer enthusiast and are very interested in any knowledge about them, this term may not be something new to you.

And even if it isn't, for those who build their knowledge on themselves by reading this article, they can. I assure you that it will be very useful. One part is the  GPU or PC graphics processing unit , what are they? Read on to learn.

What is the GPU?

As you may have read from the title, this is the graphics processing unit of the PC, but what does that mean? It is a coprocessor dedicated exclusively to the processing of computer graphics. The market leaders in the manufacture of these processors are AMD are NVIDIA and Intel .

So there is a better efficiency of the equipment thanks to it, and the effect is noticeable in the processing speed. This is why you can enable the dedicated GPU video card to play on your PC. However, although the GPU may run more efficiently, this procedure will never replace the CPU in as central processor because it is not designed for that.

 How does it work?

Le GPU has multiple processing cores, but performs its functions with a low clock frequency. This processes the data received from the CPU via internal procedures, calculates the values which must be stored for further processing.

It performs a transformation process to the values in a row and in this way outputs a signal to the monitor to reproduce the graph. Now it has two main functional units, one for vertex processing and one for pixel processing.

Treatment of vertices

It processes the information of the graphics vertices obtained from the CPU, because although it is processed by the CPU, it needs some adjustments. After getting the information, the GPU processes the rotation, rearranges the visible space at the graphic level . All this is done so that the graphic can be better visualized and proceed to the pixelation of the image.

Pixel processing

This procedure is somewhat complex, it is at this point that the graphic information , layers and effects necessary for a realistic image are applied . So, through this process, the graphic is brought to the screen where, after concluding, we can see the final image.

GPU acceleration

With GPU acceleration, it is possible to achieve higher and higher performance, as well as lower power consumption. You can do much better graphics or video conversions by using GPU accelerated encoding. All this thanks to a joint work of CPU and GPU , in this team, the CPU does the least forced work.

While the GPU does the work of analyzing the domains of the process where more attention is required for accurate calculations. Therefore, thanks to this, it will seem that in the computer everything is done much faster.

Differences between GPU and CPU

Despite the fact that both CPU and GPU perform the function of data processing. The GPU performs calculations on the illustrations because it was specially designed for this function. The CPU is the general purpose processor, it can do all kinds of calculations, thus working with graphics.

On the other hand, the GPU and the CPU have an essentially different design for performing the procedures assigned to them. The GPU is designed to run several functions in parallel.

While the processor is performing serial treatment , it has fewer cores and performs few functions in parallel. Discover how to know the size of your screen in inches or pixels in the following article.
