In 2013, Valve started betting hard on the PC gaming market beyond games, and for that he started working on a series of equipment, the Steam Machines , equipment which sought to open a gap between current video consoles and which used a clean system. operating system, known as Steam OS, a Debian distribution. Although Steam Engines have made history, Valve continues to bet on its operating system, and it shows by releasing a new update to this distro.

This new update du game operating system by Valve arrives as Steam OS 2.154 , an update based on Debian GNU/Linux 8.11 and which makes all the fixes, bests and fixes included in said release of Debian. Without a doubt, this update doesn't hurt as it makes the operating system more stable and secure than before, although we have to keep in mind that as of last month Debian 8 is no longer available. no longer supported, so it is dangerous to use it and we can endanger our computer.

This new update of SteamOS synchronizes distribution packages with those of official Debian 8.11 repositories , so that the latest versions of most of the distribution's internal packages have been downloaded, in addition to downloading a series of fixes to improve the security and performance of the base system. Generally speaking, this new update does not bring more novelties, although Valve is already working on the next update, which if it took SteamOS to a new level.

SteamOS 3.0: Valve is already working on a new update to its gaming operating system, and it will be based on Debian 9

The latest version of Debian is version 9, known as "Stretch". If SteamOS is to continue, it needs to be updated to this new version as soon as possible so that its users continue to have support and can have the latest patches, including security, to use this gaming operating system.

While many details are yet to be known about this, Valve has already dropped that they are working on a new SteamOS 3.0 update, an update that will be based on Debian 9 and which, as a first step, will come with a new kernel and new graphics drivers to get the most out of the computer hardware. However, if you want to continue to grow, you need to change course and improve the support and updates you release for your distro.

For now, if SteamOS is installed on our gaming machine, we need to make sure to install the new SteamOS 2.154 in running the following command in a terminal:

  • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

After the tasks are completed, we restart the computer and have it updated. All of our data, games and saved games will be in the system, we shouldn't lose anything in the update process.

What do you think of Valve and SteamOS? Do you think the company keeps their gaming operating system in good shape?
